Women face chaos trying to get a real identity person

At the end of last summer, Debra Kohn got very well with her local Pennsylvania DMV.

He ended three trips there with one office in the office to get a valid real ID – and all because his 1986 marriage certificate came from peace of peace, not the county.

From May 7, everyone will no longer be able to access an old driving license for a domestic flight. Instead, they need real ID or other valid identification.

Like Kohn, Americans have to bring a wealth of documents to DMV, including an original marriage certificate for those who have changed their name. Getting an original marriage certificate from the state usually takes weeks and pays a fee.

Kohn is not alone in his actual ID. Although many married or divorced women have the necessary documents handy or relatively easily obtained, others have taken their difficulties in social media. Business Insider talked to four women about a long, often confused process.

Representatives of the Transport Department, TSA and the Ministry of Internal Security did not respond to Business Insider's comment application.

“Extremely frustrating”

68 -year -old Kohn told Business Insider that he probably spent six hours a certificate he had the necessary certificate – one of the official raised seals – between many trips and DMV time. He hasn't heard that any of his friends have similar problems.

Jessiqua, a 34-year-old Oklahomas, who asked for his former wife to go for his first name, said that the long divorce procedure made it difficult to obtain a true identity card in 2020 and 2021, although he did not even turn back to his maiden name.

“When I went to get my true identity card, they wanted my marriage certificate and they wanted my divorce document,” she told BI. “I was in the middle of the divorce. I had no divorce document, I had to fight for it.”

Finally, he received a legal separation document from the lawyer.

Julie Anderson, 58, Massachusetts, said he had a “lucky” in April this year when applying for a real identity card. With the surname of his former husband, he only brought a copy of his marriage license (with the decree of divorce). The DMV employee spoke to his supervisor and somehow accepted his copy.

“The person at the table said,” I'm very surprised to do it, “Anderson told BI. “Fortunately, they did it because I went to my files and went through it all, I don't even have a copy of my original marriage permit.”

Diane Wagner, 53, was not lucky and found the whole process “extremely frustrating”. He visited his DMV office in Missouri St. In Louis three times in one day to try to get the right marriage certificate because a copy he had at home was not enough.

“It was running around the whole day, waiting in line and finding all my items, and going back again and again.”

Finally, he paid a fee and applied for a certified marriage certificate on the web, which arrived about two weeks later.

“If I had known all these hard, I would never have changed my name,” Wagner said.

People are scrambling to get their personal witnesses

The true ID law adopted in 2005 was the answer to the attacks of September 11. Initially, it had to enter into force in 2008, but the deadline has been postponed several times. Now that it really is here, it seems that many Americans are scrambling to get their true ids.

Business Insider checked on 2 May at some DMV offices. Some offices, such as Montana Fort in Benton, were opened in early May, while others were fully booked. In Louisville, Kentucky, offices were, for example, the earliest meetings on July 1st. A pop-up on the Illinois DMV website: “Because of the federally mandated real ID requirements, our facilities and the website have switched to true ID applications.”

Illinois has created a “real ID only super center” and some local governments organize their events deal with overflowTo. People still receive their true identity card after the new rules come into effect.

Even so, he was turned away. There were too many people in the line.
