In a significant update to the long-term protocol roadmap, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Blerin called for alleviating the ETH's base protocol to make the network better and resilient.
How can Ethereum achieve the simplicity of the protocol?
In a post on the 3th of the blog titled “Simplification of L1,” Blerin shared His view of the need to simplify the Ethereum network, stating that simplicity is an important – but easy undervalue – aspect of scalability and resilience. The Crypto founder continued to applaud how good the Bitcoin blockchain was.

Even a smart high school student has the ability to fully wrap their heads and understand the Bitcoin protocol. A programmer has the ability to write a client as a recreational project.

According to Baterin, the simplicity of the protocol has offered a variety of benefits that are important to ensure that blockchain networks, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, will remain a believable neutral and worldwide trusted base layer. Meanwhile, it also reduces infrastructure costs, long-term maintenance costs, and risks of bugs and malicious attacks.
In the blog post, Blerin also described how the Ethereum network could be as close as Bitcoin in five years. According to co-founder, one of the three ways of achieving this simplicity is through a better consensus layer, with the most noticeable 3-slot finite redesign.
Moreover, Blerin cited the alleviation of the implementation layer, complaining about how the complexity of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) was not necessarily increased. To fix this, Crypto co-founder suggested to replace EVM with a new minimal virtual machine (such as RISC-V).

The biggest challenge with significant mitigation (or even improvement without complex) any part of EVM is how to balance the fulfillment of desired goals in maintaining backward compatibility for existing applications.
Finally, Blerin outlined that the third and “most easily underrated” method of enhancing the simplicity of the protocol was to share a standard in different parts of the protocol. “Usually very little or no benefit to the use of different protocols to do the same thing in different places,” Ethereum co-founder said.
Buterin concluded that simplicity is quite similar to decentralization, which is both necessary in achieving resilience in blockchains.

While Blerin is looking to make adjustments to the Ethereum network, ETH investors hope that these enhancements will be translated to the Ether token value. The ETH performance is very much hurting today in 2025, registering four red months to begin the year.
As of this writing, the price of the ether stands around $ 1,817, reflecting a 1.6% decline in the past 24 hours. It is worth mentioning that the price of Ethereum has been satisfied with some bullish momentum over the last two weeks, with an increase in value of nearly 15% at the time.
