Vice President JD Vance defends Trump’s AI Pope post amid backlash

Vice-president JD Vance defended President Donald Trump on Saturday after Trump published an image generated by A-Held as the Pope on Truth Social.

The post increased a few days after Pope Francis' death, and he sparked a complete wave of the backlash of Catholic groups, politicians and media across the United States and Europe. But Vance did not start. He treated everything like a joke and retaliated on people who call him disrespectful.

Vice-president JD Vance defends Trump's Ai Pope's post in the middle of the counterpoup.

“As a rule, I agree with people who tell jokes and not well with people who start stupid wars who kill thousands of my compatriots,” wrote Vance on X, answering a direct question by Bill Kristol, editor -in -chief at Balwark.

Kristol asked if Vance really agreed with “this lack of respect and mockery of the Holy Father”. The image that Trump showed him in complete papal costume – white dresses, gold cross, pointed Bishop hat – standing as if he was running the Vatican.

The joke position came shortly after Trump made comments on the desire to direct the Catholic Church. “I would like to be a pope. It would be my number one choice,” said Trump, speaking to journalists. He also named Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who is based in New York, as a person he has appointed for work.

No American cardinal has never been elected Pope, but that did not prevent Trump from publishing the image or recommending a name. He said he would be his own “number one choice” for the papacy, even if he is not Catholic and married three times.

Catholic leaders slam Trump Post while Vance defends him

The Catholic Conference of New York State has published a public declaration through its official account X. The same position was republished by the account of the White House X.

“There is nothing intelligent or funny in this image, Mr. President,” they wrote. “We have just built our beloved pope François and the cardinals are about to enter a solemn conclave to elect a new successor from Saint-Pierre. Don't make fun of us. “

The Vatican will start its papal conclave on May 7 and the mourning period is still active. The church did not have to elect a new pope since François replaced Benedict XVI more than a decade.

Vance, who is Catholic, was one of the last visitors who met Francis before his death. The 88 -year -old Pope died on Easter Monday, arousing official ceremonies across Italy and the Catholic world.

The image of Trump disguised as a pope became the subject of several questions during the Vatican daily press briefing on Saturday. The Italian and Spanish media attacked it. They said it was “offensive” and “unpleasant” given the timing.

The first page of the Repubblica, a left -wing Italian newspaper, presented the image with comments describing Trump's position as a “pathological megalomania”.

Former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, also on X, slammed the image. “This is an image that offers believers, insults institutions and shows that the head of the right world loves the clown,” he said.

Renzi added: “Meanwhile, the American economy risks the recession and the dollar loses value. The sovereigns does damage, everywhere. ” Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni refused to comment on the question, according to in Bloomberg.

Trump's allies look at the joke as the conclave approaches

While most of the religious personalities condemned the post, some Republicans have looked into the joke. Senator Lindsey Graham joined the Mock campaign, writing on X:

“Happy to point out that there is a very positive reception and a strong momentum for President Trump to be the next pope. But I will first be admitted that there has been a certain resistance! Must keep my head down and plow – I cannot let the opponents win the day. Next week is crucial because the Papal Conclave meets … More updates to come!”

Journalists asked the White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, an answer. She said: “President Trump flew to Italy to pay tribute to Pope Francis and attend his funeral, and he was a faithful champion for Catholics and religious freedom.”
