Top Trump officials head to China for high-stakes trade talks

According to statements released on Tuesday night by both offices, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US trade representative Jamieson Greer will travel to Switzerland this weekend to address their opposite China for direct communication on trade and economic issues.
The two officers will participate in back-to-back meetings scheduled for both weekends. These meetings have been the most serious diplomatic steps taken between the two governments since President Trump's tariffs intensified last month.
Bessent confirmed the details of the meeting in an interview with Fox News, saying that it is clear that both sides need to stop the bleeding.
“We shared interests,” Scott said. “The current tariff war is not sustainable, especially on the Chinese side. And, you know, 145 percent tariffs, 125 percent, are equivalent to an embargo. We don't want to rot, we want fair trade.”
Trump adds pressure as the talks bessent and greer talks together
The discussions in front of it occur after Trump raised tariffs on Chinese imports by 145%, one step left Beijing with no choice but to retaliate.
The president has lifted most of the rewards tariffs with other American trade partners, which separates China and rising tensions. As the news of these new meetings spread, US stock futures reversed losses from earlier that night and shot hard.
Both Scott and Jamieson will also meet with Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter, who is expected to participate in conversations aimed at reducing global trade trade.
On the Chinese side, Vice Premier He Lifeng – China's leading figure in charge of handling economic relations in the US – the leading Beijing team, according to A Report From NBC News. He will sit with Scott in Switzerland as the two governments try to reduce the risk of further collapse in the economy.
Scott added another layer of context to his official announcement: “Economic security is national security, and led by President Donald J. Trump the way home and abroad for a stronger, more prosperous America.”
Scott expects “productive conversation” and it is clear that the re -balance in the global system is a top priority. “We work towards the re -balance of the international economic system towards better delivery of United States interests,” he said.
Jamieson's office also confirmed his direct meeting with a Chinese trade official in Geneva.
“Directed by President Trump, I talk to countries to re -weigh our trade relations to achieve reward, open new markets, and protect American economic and national security,” Jamieson said in a ready -made statement.
Jamieson plans to use part of the trip to meet his US -based team based in Geneva and says he expects “productive meetings with some of my counterparts as well as visiting my Geneva team that everyone is working hard to advance US interests in a range of multilateral issues.”
Trump removes pressure, says China requires a deal
Earlier on the same Tuesday, Trump told White House reporters that China had reached to restart the dialogue. “They want to get along and want to have a meeting and we will meet with them at the right time,” he said at a meeting with Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Trump also showed failure to critics requesting immediate outcomes.
“Everyone says, 'When, when, when are you going to sign a deal?'” He said. “We don't have to sign a deal. They have to sign a deal with us. They want a piece of our market. We don't want a piece of their market.”
The will throughout Washington has become tense as the administration continues to navigate pushback from allies and industries that have been hit by increased costs. However, Trump officials have been stable about their approach. The latest pushing to the President came as the US was talking to 17 other trading partners, but not China.
Scott is very clear in the comments before a subcomm home committee, saying: “China, we haven't been negotiating right now.” That line has completed how frozen talks this week. The weekend meetings in Switzerland may not end in the fight, but they signal both sides who are now speaking.
