- I paid $ 15 to take a ferry from Portland, Maine, to the nearby head of the island.
- A short ferry ride gave me great views of Maine and Casco Bay.
- In general, I enjoyed an affordable ride and got a nice biking around the island.
I like to live in Maine in Portland, but sometimes I want to change the landscape on weekends.
Fortunately, I have several options for day trips, as the local Casco Bay island ferry service offers year -round trips from downtown Portland to another nearby island.
Recently, I bought a rounded ferry ticket to Peak Island.
The island of the peaks can only be accessed through the ferry.

Only the ferry boat is accessible to the island in the Casco Bay.
Less than a thousand people live on the island of peaks throughout the year, although this number increases in summer. Many of the inhabitants of the island regularly use the ferry to drive downtown Portland to go to work, go to school or organize.
So, the raft usually runs quite often between two places. I appreciated that it gave me more flexibility to leave my day trip and return.
My 17-minute ride was picturesque and I passed many attractions.

My back and forth ferry ticket cost me only $ 15. The ship left the Portland water area directly near Kommerts Street.
I decided to sit at the top level to maximize my views at a short driving, which lasted only 17 minutes.
On the water I noticed a former military fortress for Fort Gorges; Bug Light, Lighthouse in the Lunch Athlete; and Mackworth Island, state park.
I enjoyed riding a bicycle on the island and stopping on different beaches.

When I arrived, I loved that our ferry was just a few minutes' walk from the ice cream cabin, seafood restaurants and shops that rented golf carts or bicycles.
The island seemed too big to study on foot, so I knew I wanted to rent a type of transport. Two hours and $ 20 for a bike for $ 20 would have cost me $ 100, so I chose a more affordable option.
When I got my bicycle, I was given a handy map that emphasized the various attractions of the island.
I liked to ride about bright painted houses and rocky, pristine looks. They seemed nice and quiet, contrasting from Portland's popular beaches, which can become quite crowded on weekends.
I had a lot to do on the island.

At one point, I transferred my bicycle to the Steele Battery of the Military Fortress Beton in the 1940s, covered with colored graffiti.
I was able to follow the trail to the building so I could view its tunnel and room. It was bigger than I could wait and felt a little mistake, but the views were great.
I also enjoyed the stop of the island's umbrella cover museum, which has thousands of umbrella covers that have been collected over the years.
There were also several art galleries on the island that introduced the paintings of Portland and other Maine cities.
In general, I had a great time to visit Iceland for the day.

My day trip was pleasant and affordable, especially since the ferry tickets were cheap and the ride was so short.
Piiks Island felt like a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of downtown Portland – bike was a great workout throughout the day.
I would go back, even though I could try the ferry to another Casco Bay Island for my next day trip.
