Ledger Scammers Turned to Physical Phishing To Steal Seed Phrases

- Scammers have left the traditional phishing technique to use physical mail as their new attack tactics.
- The SCAM is taking advantage of the data violation of 2020 exposed to more than 270,000 personal information by users.
The security of ledger hardware wallet users is subject to threat because scammers are now sending fraudulent mail letters asking users to reveal their important seed phrases. Fake official documents where the Ledger's name appears to obtain users' digital assets by pretending to require security updates.
Phishing is offline while scammers use traditional mail tactics
Tech commentator Jacob Canfield reported In a new scam using physical letters that closely mimic Ledger's official writing. Fake letters show official elements of the Ledger company such as their logo and business address information. They also include reference numbers to create an impression of authenticity.
The letter requires users to scan a QR code, followed by the entry of their 24-word phrase recovery to complete what seems to be a very important security update process. These letters threaten to access the purse and blocking the fund if users do not fail to carry out their proof of verification.
The 24-word phrase phrase works as a master key for cryptocurrency wallets. This is because anyone who possesses this information can fully control the digital assets associated with it. The Ledger continues to say that the company is not looking for recovery phrases through any communication channel.
Ledger will not contact you through phone calls or direct messages, or request your 24-word recovery phrase. The company warns through it statement that any request for recovery phrases indicates a fraudulent attempt.
A recent scam may be attributed to a major data violation that occurred in 2020 when attacks exposed personal information and home addresses of more than 270K Ledger customers. After the security violation, some Ledger users have found that their cryptocurrency was stolen by ample devices sent by mail during 2021.
Cryptocurrency users need to remain alert against sophisticated attacks because legitimate hardware purse providers never ask for seed phrases.
