Ultra-processed foods are driving premature deaths. Here are the 4 common culprits

Ultra-transformed foods receive a lot of attention. Research connects them to cancer, heart disease, inflammation, cognitive decline and diabetes. Meanwhile, American Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his cohort warn against the dangers of food with more than five ingredients-Kennedy himself has himself claimed “Chemically transformed foods” are the main guilty behind an epidemic of chronic diseases in the United States

But new research suggests that in addition to chronic diseases, ultra-grease food can lead to premature deaths. A recent study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine have shown that higher consumption of ultra-adjustment (UPF) is significantly linked to an increase in premature deaths (between 30 and 69 years).

Analyzing data from eight countries (Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, United Kingdom and United States), the researchers found that each 10% increased the proportion of the UPFS of the total caloric contribution increased the risk of mortality all causes by 3%. In countries with the highest UPF consumption – like the United States – up to 14% of premature deaths are attributable to the UPFS, according to the study. For example, researchers found that in 2018, 124,000 premature deaths in the United States were due to the consumption of upfs.

“The UPFS affects health beyond the individual impact of the high content of … sodium, trans and sugar fat due to changes in food during industrial transformation and the use of artificial ingredients, including dyes, artificial flavors and sweeteners, emulsifiers and many other additives and transformation aid”, ” said Principal investigator of the Eduardo Augusto Fernandes Nilson study. “Thus, the evaluation of deaths by all the causes associated with UPF consumption allows a global estimate of the effect of the processing of industrial food on health.”

4 ultra processed foods to avoid

Ultra-transformed foods are generally defined under a classification known as NOVADefining them as containing additives and undergoing significant alterations of their natural state. They tend to be in calories, low in nutrients and often have a long service life.

Although this study has not examined the impact of individual foods on premature death and the risk of mortality, another Last year study did. These researchers found that the following foods were linked to the risk of mortality all causes of all the highest causes:

  • Processed meat
  • Sweet and artificially sweet drinks
  • Dairy products
  • Ultra-tangled breakfast foods like sweet cereals

In this study, the researchers found that participants whose diets contained the highest proportion of UPFS presented a risk of mortality of all causes of more than 4%, as well as a risk of 8% higher mortality of neurodegenerative diseases, compared to those who ate the least ultra-transformed food.
