Ethereum community opposition forces EOF delay to Fusaka uprade

The director co-executive of the Ethereum Foundation, Tomasz Stańczak, said that the EVM object format (EOF) will not be deployed with the Pectra upgrade scheduled for May 7. Instead, it will be delivered with the upgrade of Ethereum Fusaka, which should occur later in the year.

Stańczak revealed this on X, noting that if the debates continue in the Ethereum forum on the EOF, it has never been part of the community plan to include it in the upgrading of Pectra.

He said:

“EOF's current discussion is not linked to the next Pectra upgrade, scheduled for May 7. Pectra upgrade does not include EOF, nor does not include EOF. Everything about Pectra takes place as planned for the May 7 version. ”

The executive of the Ethereum Foundation added that the upgrade of Fusaka has not yet been scheduled, but this should occur between the quarter and the fourth quarter, September or October being the target.

His statement comes in the middle of the current debate on the EOF on the Ethereum community on Twitter. Although Pectra upgrade should improve the user experience of Ethereum in several ways, Fusaka is delivered with more technical and significant upgrades.

Beyond the EOF, other Ethereum (EIPS) improvement proposals for inclusion in Fusaka include scaling updates, including sampling of EIP-7594 data availability and Blob EIP-7892 parameters only. Fusaka is a merger of upgrades from the Fulu and Osaka network.

What is EOF?

The Ethereum virtual machine (EVM) is the Ethereum network execution software, and EOF is a series of Ethereum (EIPS) improvement proposals that seek to make several modifications to the EVM.

These proposed modifications should improve the way EVM analyzes intelligent contracts Ethereum and make the execution of transactions more effective. According to the pseudonym developer of the Ethereum logarithmic Rex in an article in 2023, the purpose of the EOF is to ensure that the EVM can analyze intelligent contracts before deploying them on the chain.

This guarantees that they respond to all parameters before being deployed instead of the current system, where each instruction in an intelligent contract is tested chronologically when they are deployed.

He said:

“Once the EOF has been integrated into the protocol, the EVM will have a card of what each intelligent contract will look like. It will know where the code is and will therefore be able to check all this beforehand, then we can stop checking after each instruction.”

The developer added at a time when the EOF is important for Ethereum to achieve its goal of becoming a mature computer platform.

Strong opposition to the EOF in the Ethereum community

However, many in the Ethereum community oppose the EOF, noting that it is too complex and has no obvious advantage for the network and its users. This led to a series of debates between the stakeholders who push it and to them.

Several stakeholders who opposed it include the developer Pascal Caversaciowho has published an article saying that his complexity prevails over the need and the technical director of the paradigm Georgios Kostantopoulos.

Even an old developer Ethereum, now in Solana, jokingly advised that the developers of Ethereum should focus strongly on the EOF so that they have less time to compete with Solana on things that really matter.

This strong opposition is also reflected in a survey held on the subject on Waterproof. The survey shows that 85% of voters are against the idea, while 98.3% of the votes in the registered ETH also said “no”. For many of those who oppose, the price in difficulty of ETH is proof that this should not be a priority.
