Ampere CEO sings amazon praise in chips because it has a “prominent team”

  • Fortune Brainstorm at AI conference On Wednesday in London, Ampere's CEO, Renée James, praised Amazon's “Outstanding Team” dedicated to smart -production. “They have a truly unique way to speed up data on their network,” James said.

Renée James, CEO of semiconductor designer Ampere, praised Amazon's efforts to make his chips.

James said that the technical giant had a team that has been together for a long time, which he said was critical of a complex and competitive semiconductor business.

“Amazon has a uniquely outstanding team they have had together for years,” James said at the Fortune Brainstorm AI conference on Wednesday. “One of the hallmarks of successful semiconductors is how many generations the team has done together? And the answer in Amazon is a lot.”

In the last several years, Amazon has developed its AI chips. This effort is part of the strategy that offers Amazon customers with their own hardware to accompany their cloud database services. In the past, Amazon had a non-II chip called Graviton. It now also has two AI chips, called Treecanium and Inferentia, which specializes in (as names refer to) training models and already trained in providing predictions for them.

In February, Amazon further pushed the chip design to the duplicate Ocelot from his first quantum communication chip.

According to James, the Amazon development team and its scope as a company made it in a good position.

“They have a truly unique way to speed up data on their network,” James said. “And they have a prominent silica team who has been able to build truly great products for their use. I think their power and team are very successful with this strategy.”

The new chips that develop Amazon are designed for competing industry's biggest players, such as Nvidia and Intel. James began his long career in the semiconductor business Intel, where he worked for almost 30 years, finally working as a company president.

In 2017, he founded an ampere – ambitious move, given the technical knowledge and capital investments needed to enter the semiconductor business. James said he saw the opportunity to design a new type of chip due to the rise in cloud processing.

“We knew that how the cloud used software was different than the software consumed by the company, [which was] In this linear scaling, always on, always on demand [way] And the microprocesses we built were designed to turn on and off to be effective for different workloads, but not for the cloud? “James explained.

Ampere launched the original investments of Oracle and Carlyle Group, which James said “usually not daring.” In March, Masayoshi Son Softbank Group announced that he would buy ampere $ 6.5 billionTo. It is expected that Ampere will play a recent project in the Stargate initiative to build data centers throughout the country.
