Vitalik Buterin Warns Ethereum Has Become Needlessly Complex, Calls for Mass Simplification of Chain

Vitalik Buterin wants to simplify Ethereum (ETH).

In a new blogThe co-founder of Ethereum rents how Bitcoin (BTC) is “beautifully simple”, which, according to him, is the key to the crypto-servant king of “basic layer of confidence in the world”.

“Historically, Ethereum has often not done this (sometimes because of my own decisions), which has contributed to a large part of our excessive development expenses, to all kinds of security risks and to the insularity of R&D culture (research and development), often in the pursuit of advantages that have proven to be illustrated.”

Buterin maintains that simplicity can increase the number of people who can participate in protocol research and reduce the cost of creating new infrastructure. He also says that simpler protocols have a reduced risk of catastrophic bugs and a smaller “social attack surface”.

The co-founder of the ETH describes how Ethereum could get closer to Bitcoin's simplicity level in five years, starting with the consensual layer.

“The new effort of a consensus layer (historically called the” beam chain “) aims to use all our learning in consensus theory, the development of ZK-Snark, the jalitude of economy and other areas in the last ten years to create a layer of optimal long-term consensus for Ethereum. This layer of consensus.

Buterin also wishes to simplify the Ethereum execution layer.

“The EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) increases more and more in complexity, and a large part of this complexity has proven to be unnecessary (in many cases of my fault): a virtual machine 256 bits which is too optimized for very specific forms of cryptography which are today less and more relevant.

Trying to treat these current realities in the spot by blow will not work. It took a lot of effort to (only partially!) Remove the self -destruction opcode, for a relatively low gain. The recent debate EOF (EVM object format) shows the challenges of doing the same thing in the virtual machine.

As an alternative, I recently proposed a more radical approach: instead of making average (but always disturbing) modifications of the EVM for a gain of 1.5x, make a transition to a new virtual machine much better and simpler for the good of 100 times.

Like fusion, we have fewer disturbing points of change, but we each make much more significant. More specifically, I suggested replacing the EVM with RISC-V, another virtual machine which is the virtual machine in which Ethereum ZK-Progans will be written. »»

At the time of writing, Ethereum is negotiated $ 1,803.
