The Story Behind Netflix’s Angi: Fake Life, True Crime

IN 2008, the death of a fashion designer in a Barcelona apartment would reveal one of the coldest and most disturbing crimes in recent Spanish history. The author? A woman who hid behind false names, invented lives and had a strange capacity to manipulate others. This is the story of María Ángeles Molina – simply known as Angi – the main subject of Angi: false life, real crimeA documentary on Netflix on May 1.

More than two episodes, director Carlos Aggulló deeply plunges into a case that shocked the country: The murder of Ana Páez – A Molina woman not only killed, but used to support a fraud program involving false identities, life insurance policies and a trace of lies as complex as they are cruel.

The murder of Ana Páez

Ana was a 35 -year -old fashion designer who thought he had found in Angi a friend, a mentor and a trustworthy figure. The two have known each other for about 10 years, after meeting when they worked in the same company, and their obligation was no longer strong than over time. Molina presented herself as a prosperous, cultivated and generous entrepreneur, and never hesitated to shower Ana with praise. What Ana did not know was that Angi had a plan to steal her identity – and ultimately, her life.

On February 19, 2008, Ana was found dead in an apartment rented in Barcelona. She was naked, with a plastic bag above her head sealed with adhesive tape. The scene initially suggested a sexual crime, but the evidence highlighted something much more calculated. Just before the murder, video surveillance images have shown that an egg entering a bank with a wig and withdrawing € 600 from Ana's account.

Stage a crime that has never happened

Angi tried to hide the murder by organizing sexual assault. To do this, she paid two men in a male brothel in Barcelona for samples of semen, which she planted on the scene of the crime. But the investigators quickly dismantled the false story. The evidence has constantly underlined Angi, who, once questioned, gave several contradictory versions of events.

At one point, she said that she had bought a watch from El Corte Inglés at the time of murder. Later, she said she stopped to buy yogurt. In one of the most bizarre statements in the case – made with a disturbing coldness – she declared in court: “Without yogurts or condensed milk, I am nothing.” The sentence amazed the victim's family and the magistrates.

The fraud regime

The murder was part of a broader financial fraud regime. Before Ana's death, Molina had asked for several loans and life insurance policies on behalf of Ana using forged documents. Some policies had important payment values. The plan was clear: eliminate Ana, assume her identity and recover money.

Molina also used another woman's identity, Susana B. She has acquired Susana's personal data after Susana left a copy of her documents in a copy workshop. Molina used information to open bank accounts and carry out fraudulent transactions.

Police have found crucial evidence, including Ana's documents hidden behind the water tank in the Molina bathroom and a sealed bottle of chloroform – more proving the premeditation.

The trial

In 2012, the court concluded that “the amount and the relevance of the evidence, amply accredited”, made no doubt about the attacker. Molina was sentenced to 22 years in prison: 18 for homicide and 4 for the counterfeiting of documents.

A suspicious past

The murder of Ana Páez led the authorities to reopen a previous affair: the 1996 death of Molina's husband, Juan Antonio Álvarez Litben. The renewed investigation has raised serious suspicions on the involvement of Molina, in particular since she inherited her assets. But without proof of equipment, the case remains unresolved.

A life of deception

Over the years, Molina has designed several identities. She claimed to be a psychologist, lawyer, cancer in treatment, mother to non -existent children and victim of abuse. It has even simulated pregnancies and used social media to strengthen its developed manufacturing. She was a full -time actress in her own network of lies.

Agulló said that the search for equipment Corner It was like sailing in a “mirrors room”. “We have examined more than 2,000 pages of legal documents, reports and family files. We conducted more than 60 interviews with retired police, detectives and people close to both cases,” he said. “It was a multifaceted survey – just like the many Angi identities.”
